The Beautiful Ranks of Humanity

On a day like any other, which is to say distinct and unrepeatable, a letter arrived in my mailbox.

There was no return address and no discernible postmark. It was sealed with a purple sticker that said Thank You! in white letters.

Inside, the donation page from The Lightning Notes website was printed out. THANX FOR THE DAILY INSPIRATIONS!, was written on it. Folded in it was $100 in five 20s. I was drop-jawed and delighted.

I flipped the paper over, held it up to the light, looked at every square centimeter for anything that identified the sender. Until I got it: Sender, you don’t need me to know who you are.

You’re from that beautiful rank of humanity who anonymously puts kindness into days like any other.

Your rank pays tolls for cars behind you and starts standing ovations. You put quarters into meters about to expire and put bags in parks for those who forgot one for their dog.

You can leave those in your wake drop-jawed and delighted, feeling cared for, less alone. And here’s something else that’s great: the only requisite to be among your ranks is a willing heart.

So, to you, Sender, and your beautiful rank, thank you. Thank you for reminding me that kindness, too, is a force to be reckoned with.

The Lightning Notes is funded by kind donors. If something here strikes you, I'd be grateful if you'd consider donating. Click to Donate!
