Being More of Ourselves

There’s a less common question that sprouted for me out of a common question.

Common question first: What advice would you give your younger self?

It’s often of the go easy on yourself, don’t worry so much about what others think variety.

Less common question second: What advice would your older self - your self years from today - give your now self?

Take your earbuds out and more afternoons off. Kiss your phone goodbye for one day/week. Speak up when people you like, people you want to like you, perpetuate unkindness against others, against themselves. Be sweeter to yourself. Ask for help.

Some stuff we have to learn in life’s trenches; even if my older self told my now self, could I hear, believe, understand it?

Still, it’s worthwhile to imagine what our older selves would point us towards.

Not so we can help ourselves or improve ourselves, but so that we can be more of ourselves.
