What We Don't Have to Get Used To
A few things worth not getting used to.
The ninth, fourteenth, twenty-third crocus of spring.
That sore, victorious feeling after a good workout.
Lying cocooned in bed while it rains cats and dogs outside.
The smell of peppermint, wood stoves, low tide.
Someone we adore answering the phone.
Calling ourselves dumb or pathetic when we stumble.
Waking up to another - another - morning.
There is nothing mandating we adjust to any of this; there is everything enabling us to.
Our call is to be awake enough to defy the latter and remember the former.
