The $700 Pair of Scissors
At the salon, the stylist and I get to talking about equipment.
She tells me her hair dryer cost $200.
Wow, I say. Mine cost $20.
Then she tells me her scissors cost $700.
What?! I say. That's crazy.
Then I catch myself. Her scissors are the tools of her trade. Of course she'd invest in them. Just like I invest in my computer. Or a chef invests in her knives, a violinist invests in his instrument.
They are extensions of the human hand and, perhaps, human heart. The means by which we do the work we want to do in the world.
Makes total sense, I say. She nods. Yup.
And then the stylist gives me a great cut with a $700 pair of scissors.
