You're Never the Only One
There's a transformative generosity we can show each other.
It often comes forth in recovery groups, spiritual communities, or just two sitting at a cafe.
It's the generosity of spirit when one person lets another know that they aren't alone in their experience.
I have walked in that shame, loneliness, anxiety, the generous soul says. I know the moment you're in.
And it's like someone taking your cold hand in their warm ones and holding it until the blood flows again.
I have been comforted, so comforted by this generosity. And when I'm in pain, I try to remember that hard as it is, there will be a point where I can use what wisdom I've learned from it in service of lessening another's.
For to paraphrase C.S. Lewis, Kinship begins when one says to another, You too? I thought I was the only one.
