The Best Place to Start
I want to do more pushups this year.
There are apple sauce jars to open and furniture to move. But right now, that's all a little hard for me.
So, I thought I'd start off with five pushups a day, adding two every week. It seemed small and reasonable enough.
Yesterday morning, I got down to pound out my first five. Here we go! I told myself. Let's DO this.
And I could barely do two pushups.
I lay on the floor, breathing loudly. This isn't exactly where I'd planned on starting. But as nearly every spiritual tradition tells us, Start where you are. Not where you want to be.
I took a big step outside my discouragement and recalibrated. Two pushups was better than no pushups. So, I'll start with two a day, adding one a week.
Because that's where I am. And where we are is always the best place to start.
